Although our group is small, we have managed to serve our community in various ways. Some of our members have given talks to local groups. Some have even helped man the phones in the Extension Office. We currently have a member putting together an insect collection for use at the Extension Office to aid in identification.
One thing that our group strives for is education. We have done this in various ways, including helping to put on a “green series” at our local library and developing our own series at the Extension Office. Our goal is to work more with the 4-H groups in our area, and are thinking of ways to include them in one of our meetings.
Major Accomplishments or Projects:
The Visitors’ Center Landscape Project is an ongoing project. Members donate plants to use in landscaping the site and take turns weeding and help to mulch the bed.
Every year our association has an educational display at the fair. Informational flyers are set out for the public to take and MGs answer questions.
This is the second summer that our members have been involved with an outdoor activity with the 4-H. This year we helped make butterflies out of screens, planted barrels of flowers for display on the fairgrounds, and helped plant a salsa bucket.
The 4-H Propagation Workshop uses plants and potting mix donated by a local greenhouse. MGs help the 4-H members to propagate those plants.
In our Plant-A-Row for the Hungry project, members donated extra vegetables that they grew to the food pantry.
