Waushara County Master Gardeners

Hello to everyone from beautiful Waushara County. The name of our Master Gardener group is Shara Gardeners. We are a group dedicated to educating the public as well as beautifying the public gardens of our county. While most of our members are graduates of the Master Gardener program being a graduate is not a prerequisite of joining. We volunteer in many ways from being members of our local Tree Board, to planting and maintaining the public gardens in the city of Wautoma. Several members are from out of our area and they maintain public gardens in Berlin and Plainfield. Other projects that we have been involved with are sponsoring informational seminars that are free and open to the public. In the winter of 2005 we had a wonderful series of speakers from across the state that spoke on such topics as shade gardening, water gardening, hardscaping and perennials. We also plant a garden for the new owners of the Waushara Habitat for Humanity house each year. In addition to being a service organization we also enjoy learning from each other and having fun while doing that. One of our favorite pastimes in the summer are the meetings where we go and visit each others gardens. This past summer those visits included a visit to one of our members minirail garden. What a delight to watch the little train chugging amongst the flowers. Another one of our members invited us to learn about winemaking from the fruits of his garden complete with wine and cheese tasting. This spring in 2006 we welcomed the new graduates of the recent Master Gardener program by presenting each of them with a gift of garden tools and a gardening apron.
