Portage County Master Gardeners

PCMGA Board 2007:

Youth Education:

• 4-H Gardening Class:  was held at MG's home featuring native landscaping
• Amherst & Rosholt Fair: assisted 4H Judges in fruit and vegetable areas

Community Education:

• Garden Line:  took calls two afternoons a week in Extension office to compliment Hort Assistant’s morning hours.
• Garden Walk for Family Resource Center:  helped plan and act as guides. Three MGs yards were among the ten gardens included in this first time fundraiser tour designed for the Center.
• Horticultural Presentations were made by several MGs to:
  – local community groups on perennials, composting and other garden topics.
  – MGs in Specialized and General Training and at monthly meetings on such topics as perennials, and plant propagation
  – single Rama on Gardening on a Budget
  – general Public at Jung’s Garden Center
• Educational Booths:  set up at Gro Show, Amherst & Rosholt Fairs featuring MG program, entomology and Extension publication.  Answered gardening questions.
• Articles for PC MG Newsletter:  are written by many local MGs and edited into the monthly newsletter by local MG editors.

Support Services:

• General MG Training Program:  assisted Extension Agent at each class
• Hi Rise Apartment Solarium:  worked with staff at City senior/low income building to bring houseplants in solarium back to health and developed a notebook for staff to refer to for future care

Display Gardens designed, planted, pruned and cared for at

• Portage County Courthouse
• Several Beds for City of Stevens Point
• Public Library
• 82nd Airborne monument
• Ruth Gilfrey Human Services
• Jackson School
• Lincoln Senior Center
• Several local churches

Specialized MG Training in Flowers:  worked with Wood and Waupaca County MGs and agents to organize and conduct this training for MGs.

Compost Bin Sale: assisted the Portage County Solid Waste Department in publicizing the first county wide bin sale and in helping with 2 day bin pick-up in May. Over 440 bins were sold.

Hancock Research Station: MGs help with display gardens and the annual Twilight Tour

Operation Bootstrap:  donated extra produce to local food pantry

Educational tours:  organized several for local tours for area MGs

WIMGA:  participated on two tree boards in nearby counties with projects

Tree Boards:  participated on two tree boards in nearby counties with projects, planning and grant writing (2 MGs)

Lakes Monitor Volunteer for DNR: assisted DNR in monitors and doing water testing in nearby county (1 MG)

MG Plant Swap: organized a fall & spring plant and seed sharing among local MGs

1999 Plant Sale and Education Event:  began to plan and organize this MG fundraiser.  Money will be used for MG projects and continuing education.
