Perennials at Boorman House in Mauston.

We started in 2003 with only 3 members and 1 certified MGV, with the first official meeting in 2004. There were 7 certified MGVs in 2005 and now our group has grown to over forty members with 21 certified MGVs. We publish a monthly newsletter covering pertinent tips for that month as well as minutes of the previous meeting, and location and agenda for that month’s meeting. MGVs have several projects lined up for next year, including gardens at Hess Memorial Hospital, Buckhorn Park, and Union Center Garden Project.

Major Accomplishments or Projects:

  1. Several MGVs transplanted perennials at the historic Boorman house in Mauston in memory of one of their valued volunteers, Karen Wright.

  2. JCMGVs painted the 4-H display shelves and also assisted in judging at the Juneau County Fair. Two members also judged flowers at a festival in Monroe County.

  3. Four volunteers helped landscape a gazebo and garden area in Necedah which is enjoyed by people of all ages.

  4. MGVs were guest speakers at local civic organizations (Lionesses, American Legion, libraries) as another part of our community involvement.

  5. One of our MGVs puts on a yearly plant sale with a great deal of the plants donated by our MGVs. Each year she then gives all the proceeds to a local charity which helps the elderly and other local residents including those with diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Highlighted Project: County Sesquicentennial Gardens

The flower bed at the main entry to New Lisbon.

Juneau County celebrated their sesquicentennial this year and New Lisbon was also honored to have Discover Wisconsin profile the city on Wisconsin television stations. It was one of many places included in the episode Hidden Valleys of Southwest Wisconsin, showcasing the natural beauty, rich history and diverse cultural attractions of 10 unglaciated southwestern counties, including Juneau Co.

The Juneau Co. MGA was asked by the city to prepare several flower beds for the occasion, for which the MGVs received many compliments. There were four planters built by the city. The main planter, pictured here, is at the main entry to town. Another was at the opposite side of town, one in front of the library and another by a pond. There were also six cement planters that were made to resemble logs. The planters are in areas that would be seen by everyone who comes to town. The MGVs got most of the plants — primarily annuals — for the planters from a local nursery but received some donated plants. The JCMGA plans to maintain these plantings in the future.
