The Rock Garden also features a Japanese Garden. Dwarf speedwells send up purple and pink blooms on spikes, and alumroot (Heuchera spp.) flowers dangle from their long stems by the pond. There is also Japanese Solomon's seal (Polygonatum japonicum), tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa), Siberian iris (Iris sibirica), and thyme (Thymus serphyllum) growing between the stepping stones leading to the Japanese lantern that accents the area. The red cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) adds a splash of color in early August.
