The High Plains garden is characterized by its sandy medium and flat sandstone rocks.  This area is level and exposed to full sun all day.  In contrast to some of the other regional areas of the Rock Garden, the plants here are both drought resistant and heat-loving.

The sand-loving poppy mallow (Callirhoe involucrata) with its raspberry-red flowers covers the northwest corner.  The golden flowers of a tickseed (Coreopsis spp.) and prairie golden aster (Chrysopsis camporum) add midsummer color to the garden.  The purple-flowered asters (Aster spp.) provide a colorful early autumn backdrop.

Clockwise from top left:  Genista sagitalis (Broom) blossoms profusely in the spring; shrub rose Rosa 'Nearly Wild' blooms throughout the entire season and Callirhoe invulucrata (Purple Prairie Mallow) is a native prairie plant that exudes vibrancy from early summer through fall.
