The Giant Pumpkin Regatta
Sponsored by Firestone.
Held on beautiful Lake Mendota, the Great Pumpkin Regatta involves actually racing giant pumpkins on the lake. Dr. James Nienhuis, plant breeding genius and UW Department of Horticulture faculty, has specially bred giant pumpkins to be nautically aerodynamic (Sleek Sailing Squash!). The innards of the pumpkin are carved out into the shape of a seat and this shell is then placed into a large tractor tire inner tube (provided by the friendly folks at Firestone). Once gently set onto the water the racing ensues!
