SPEAKER
Laura Mortimore gave a presentation on her study abroad experience to the Philippines that she participated in last semester.
BOWLING
On March 6 we will compete against the Turf Club in a bowling extravaganza. Time to be announced.
CHICAGO
We will be going to Chicago the weekend of March 7-9. The estimated price each person will have to pay is $130 dollars. That covers meals and lodging. The club is covering entrance fees and transportation.
Here is the tentative itinerary.
Friday March 7-leave Madison after everybody is done with classes and drive to Chicago. Have dinner in Chicago and stay in a motel.
Saturday March 8- Visit Ball Seed in the morning, have lunch, then visit the Chicago Botanic Garden in the afternoon, have dinner, stay in a motel.
Sunday March 9- Go to the Chicago Flower and Garden show then drive back to Madison in the afternoon.

JOB OPS
Working for Patrick Krysan who is an assistant professor in the Department of Horticulture and who also works for the Genome Center of Wisconsin. The job would pay about $10/hour and would include staking individual plants growing in the biotron (across from the Nat) and then harvesting seeds from individual lines. Irish Lane Greenhouses is currently in need of a full-time employee with an interest in horticulture to work in plant production. This is a seasonal position. Hours are 8-4:30 Monday thru Friday from March 10 to April 15. After that time the hours would vary to include some evenings and weekends through May. Beginning pay is $8/hour. We are going to the ORCHID SHOW at the Alliant Energy Center on Saturday. The Hort Club will pay the admission cost and we might go out to lunch afterward. We are planning to meet at the HORT BUILDING AT 10 AM ON SATURDAY FEBRUARY 1.

Chris (our treasurer) will pay the $100 DEPOSIT to the people who bought plane tickets to Costa Rica through the Hort Club once he gets reimbursed from American Airlines.
Kate (our CALS student council rep) informs us that the CALS STUDENT COUNCIL would like us to bring info on the Hort Club to the next meeting which is next Tuesday in 1360 Genetics. Also they had talked about holding a Barn Dance.
CALS DAYS FOR KIDS- this is when a whole bunch of elementary school kids invade the Stock Pavilion to learn about CALS. Last year we set up a booth and brought in cool plants and made self watering terrariums that the kids could take home. TSHIRTS- they are going to about $10 a shirt and will be green with white writing. There will be two design options offered.

Crystal has funding for a COMMUNITY GARDEN on the South Side and so we are going to try to plant it in April or May (after frost potential has decreased). We might include the Master Gardeners in this project. If you are interested in a Capstone Experience associated with this garden contact Crystal. Her email is clstewart@students.wisc.edu
Our DIGITAL CAMERA was stolen in Costa Rica so we are going to start looking for a new one at a good price.
Possible fundraisers: Roses for Valentines Day or Green Carnations and Lucky Bamboo for St. Patricks Day.

Elections were held at the meeting for a member to take Mike W.’s place for next semester. Kenzie was elected as V.P. for next semester. Since Kenzie was the Activities Coordinator we then held an election for that position. Paul was elected as the A.C. for next semester. Since Paul was the Web Page Person we elected Steve to help Paul out with that.
The organization that we are adopting a family from would really like it if one of us could adopt one of the kids through the Big Sisters/Brothers program. Any volunteers?

1.Update from CALS Student Council Rep. Steve
2. Laura Jull is really excited about MidAm which is in Chicago from Jan. 15-17. Mike S. has the flyer on this event. The Hort Club will sponsor you if you want to go.
3. Fund-raisers-The poinsettia sale is a no go but we might do a Valentine's Day rose sale.
4. ASM Travel Grants-we have to apply four weeks before the trip, Missy has the info and Mike and Jamaica will help her with the mound of paperwork.
5. T-Shirts-Paul's design was very popular. (a picture of pansies with the slogan, "UW-Horticulture Society--More than just a bunch of pansys--") -Kenzie and Crystal are going to draw the pansy design.
6. November speaker-maybe replaced by the Thanksgiving Dinner or we could have Bill Hoyt (of Allen Centennial Gardens) or someone from Olbrich Gardens.
7. Thanksgiving Dinner Party-Thursday November 21 -we signed up to bring different parts of the meal, the list will be circulated so you can also sign up.
8. Christmas Fund Drive-we are going to Adopt a Family through Salvation Army (or some other charitable organization).
9. If you are taking the Costa Rica class as a capstone you need to have you advisor and Irwin Goldman sign a waiver so that it will count. Same thing for the Fruits class if you need that to cover the fruit class requirement. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me so talk to you advisor.
