Meeting
Minutes 2008 - 2009
December 3rd,
2008
Here is what happened at our meeting
last night.......
Since Nathan is
going to Chile next semester, Lauren and Jena will be stepping up as our new
co-presidents.
PLANT SALE-- The
plants have arrived! Please get your plants out of the greenhouse ASAP! We
don't want them getting any creepy-crawlies.
MidAm Show--the
more people that go, the better. Plus, the more fun it will be.
We are thinking of leaving the 14th, spending the night in Chicago,
the next day at the show, and then coming home (the 15th).
The club does earn money for going to the show! Hotel expenses will
be paid by the club.
If you would like to go, you need the
validation code
(5424) from
Dr. Jull, and you need to PRE-REGISTER to get in free! If you did not receive
this information from her by email, please contact one of the officers.
We also had a lovely slideshow of various activities throughout the semester to
celebrate our last meeting of the semester. See you next semester, and good
luck on finals!
November 19th,
2008
Here is what happened this week at
our Hort Society Meeting! (If you didn't come, you seriously missed out!)
CLUB BUSINESS
Our THANKSGIVING DINNER is this weekend!! Sunday, Nov 23
at Lauren's house. Come between 5:30 and 6pm.
WHERE: Lauren's house....503 W. Washington (Madison)
WHEN: come 5:30~6 until we're full of food!
TRANSPORTATION: the 82 bus (free, safe ride) and the 19 bus go right to Lauren's
corner (BASSETT AND WASHINGTON) Super easy to get to! Her door is on the left
side of the porch.
FOOD: see list at bottom.
WHY? to have a good time of course!
Please keep in mind that we have a Holiday Plant
Sale going on. It is being done by order form.....So if you are seeing
your grandma, aunt, cousins, mom, etc let them know! Plants will be delivered
the first week of December.
T-SHIRTS have been reordered! If you want one, let
us know! It is a dark green T with "We've got it growing on" in white on the
back with a pretty tree. On the front it says University of Wisconsin
Horticulture Society.
Once again, Mid-Am Tradeshow is
going on January 15ish in Chicago. It's a great way to network with people and
get a bunch of cool stuff, along with samples! We would like to get a car full
of people to go have a fun day down there. The people there are the "who's who"
of the horticultural industry and are from all over the country.
We will be holding elections for president
for spring term during our last meeting of the semester. Nathan will be studying
abroad in Chile. (Good luck!) Also, if anyone would like to be a part of our
MACHS committee, you're welcome to join!
CLUB FUN!
So this is where you guys missed out if you didn't come.
Johnson's Nursery came out to teach us about grafting on a
commercial scale. They do some seriously cool grafting of some rarer plants.
Mike Yanny, head of the propagation dept, and his foreman Moises gave us a quick
presentation of the tools needed, and how the grafting of trees is on a larger
scale.
According to Mike, propagators know more about plants than anyone else because
of the amount of experimenting that needs to be done to get a graft, or other
propagation methods, to work. Quote from Mike "If you're not
killing plants, you're not learning anything." :-)
He showed us some cool tricks, and really stressed that timing and care
is critical when propagating! We also got treated to some poetry. Mike and
Moises let us try some grafts ourselves (Go John!) and made some specially for
us as well. Some of us got lilacs, crabapples...
(in case you forgot care, here it is........ keep graft in warm place for 7-10
days. Take off tape to make sure callus formed. Reapply tape, and put in fridge
until spring when it can be planted outside. When planting, bury everything but
two buds that will stick up out of the ground.)
Thanksgiving dinner list:

Jesse D "idk" :-)

mold problems before, now hopefully are gone). They will be red and white.
PLEASE EMAIL ME BACK TO KNOW EXACTLY HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL BE THERE, TOMORROW,
12:30, IN FRONT OF MOORE HALL! Everything is ready to go, we just need to plant
it! (May be chilly, dress appropriately)
-Plant of the Meeting:
presented by Jenna
Ananas bracteatus (wild pineapple)
-pineapples do not grow on trees! The fruit actually comes out of the
middle of the plant, usually on a stalk (of varying lengths)
- likes slightly acidic soils pH 6.1-6.5
-watering: don't over water, water the cup, not so much the soil (is a
bromeliad)
-likes light to partial shade
-in light, the leaves turn pink; when fruits, leaves turn a brilliant
scarlet shade
- on this plant, the fruit is smaller than your typical eating pineapple
-propagation: suckers, slips, crown of fruit ( plant or set in water to
root)
-native to Brazil
HOLIDAY SALE!!
-this year we will once again have a holiday plant sale. It is by order only.
Order forms will be available by Monday in the Hort Society mailbox (across from

MACHS
-Jesse and Nathan went this year and had a fun time! They went to see orchids
grown in a cave, a nursery, downtown Kansas City, do a little competing, and
listen to some fun speakers!
Of course next year we are hosting this, so if you ave any great ideas for the
programs, field trips, activities, etc, or just want to be a part of the
planning committee, let us know!

Words of the week:
Spanish French
-podar to prune tailler
-la tierra the soil la terre
-regar to water arroser
Jesse thought it would
be cool to get involved with the Conservatory--it is looking a bit too green, it
needs more colorful flowers! So, as a small project to be able to get our hands
in warm soil during the winter, we thought it would be fun to help out with
planting, doing some general maintenance, and even doing some propagating of
cool plants to grow in there! Any plant ideas?
October 22nd,
2008
Here is what
happened at our meeting tonight....
Plant of the week:
GRAPES! We talked about Cabernet Sauvignon and St. Pepin grapes tonight, and
even got to eat a few! If you would like to share a
special plant, bring it in!
Apple Orchard Trip: Nathan, Lauren, and Christy went, and
it sounds like they had fun! Next year, we will try to go a little earlier so we
can pick more apples.
* If you sign up for an event and decide not to go anymore, please email us so
we don't wait around*
MARSHMALLOW ROAST!! This coming Wednesday
at Picnic Point, 5:30 pm at fire pit #2. We will provide the hotdogs and
marshmallows. Bring a blanket, a friend, and food!
Bulb Planting: the grounds committee of the hort building
asked if we would be interested in planting tulips in the semi-circle of the
front doors. This will happen Friday, November 7 at 12:30pm. Allen Centennial
gardens is also donating roses for around the Hort building to spruce it up a
bit.
Also, the courtyard is looking somewhat sad, and we would like to fix it up and
make it a hort club project, working on small portions at a time! If you have
any ideas, let us know!! We would like to start this spring semester.
We also had some works of the week in french and in
spanish!
Plant = la plante= la planta
flower= la fleur = la flor
tree= l'arbre = el arbol
Again, please get your membership fees in so we can get
more activities going!
MACHS is next week! One person can no longer go, so if
anyone has the time, please consider going. It will be a great time!
Mid-Am this year is January 14-16 in Chicago: It's a
great conference to meet with potential employers, find out what people want in
the industry, and has great internship opportunities. It's got an awesome
tradeshow that you can get samples, free stuff, buy some things... You also get
some time to hang out in the Windy City.
Scholarships-- Wilco-Milwaukee is offering a nice
scholarship (Nathan got $1000 last year!) It's for people in hort or landscape
related areas. The deadline is November 30. As always, check with the office or
you advisors for more opportunities.
And the LAST thing! One of our own
hort people has experienced time in Iraq and is part of an organization on
campus (Vets for Vets)--tomorrow is their last day for donations of magazines,
movies, books, CDs, small toiletries (ie toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand
sanitizer, lotion, lib balm, etc), cards. So head on over to the Memorial Union
and drop some stuff off! It will all be sent to select units over in Iraq right
now!
Thanks for reading! Have a great night!
Celine
October 8th,
2008
Here is what we went over....
We now have about $3000 in our account
after paying off all the plant sale items, and this weekend we made $44 at the
pumpkin regatta. Now we will be able to have more t-shirts made. if anyone is
interested is getting a hort club t-shirt, please email back!
We want to set up an outing to an APPLE ORCHARD!! We
would like to do it on Sunday, October 19. It is only about fifteen minutes
outside of Madison and has a haunted house, pick-your-own apples, and pumpkins.
We will meet around 11am.
We would also like to have a MARSHMALLOW SOCIAL out at
Picnic Point. Let us know if you're interested. It would be on October 15 or
October 29 (Wednesday nights opposite our meetings).
There has been some interest in having a holiday plant
sale with pointsettias, small little norfolk island pines, and christmas cacti.
It wouldn't be like our fall sale....it would be done by order form and then
delivered. This way there wouldn't be leftovers or a table to man!
Nathan has been looking for workshop ideas. In the past,
there has been interest in a bonsai workshop, a salsa workshop with Jim, and cut
flowers. If YOU have an idea, please share what you would like to do!
Jim saved a lot of seeds from the giant pumpkins this
year. He says that on the internet one seed goes for $10! He would like us to
put five seeds in an envelope, put on a cool sticker, and sell packets of 5
seeds for $10 over the web! It would be another great way to get our name out
there!
IMPORTANT DATES!!
October 15-bulb planting
Apple Orchard trip October 19
MACHS Oct 30-Nov 2 ****If you would still like to go, Nathan needs to know NOW.
After going through all our business, we carved
pumpkins!! (We also left a surprise pumpkin outside of Jim's office door :-)
)
And....if you are really really bored, and you would like to see what you missed
out on, check out this video--we watched this last night too.
But ONLY if you don't have homework you should be doing right now! :-)

2008
Hey all!
Here are some of the things we went over tonight.....
1. PUMPKIN REGATTA
-Jim Nienhuis came in to give us some updates. It is officially on October
4, 2008 at 12pm on the Hoofers pier at the Memorial Union.
-Posters are available to hang--you will just need to change the date on it
(originally it was set for Sept 27)
-Jim will need help NEXT THURSDAY to pick up his aerodynamically nautical
pumpkins out the the West Ag Research Station (on Mineral Point road past
Target). Please let him know if you would be willing/able to help. They will
meet at 3:30pm outside the DC Smith Greenhouse entrance to the building.
-We may be selling smaller pumpkins that Jim grew this year.
-Kate had a great idea to make T-shirts to sell to the public for next
year's Regatta. Maybe we will use our current poster design?
2. PLANT SALE
-Thank you to all of you who did such a great job running the sale over the
weekend and beyond. It really makes a difference. GREAT JOB!
-thankfully this year we did make a profit to fund our activities! Update
next time.
3.MACHS
-MACHS is the Mid American Collegiate Horticulture Society: each year a
different midwestern university hosts the competition--there are plant ID,
general knowledge, media, etc portions of this competition. Each club also
gives a presentation on what their club does each year for activities and
fundraisers and such. It's a great way to get new ideas and meet people!!! We
also need ideas for next year because we will be hosting this.
-This year is is OCTOBER 30-NOVEMBER 2 at NW Missouri State University.
-We want to send a team of 4 people....if you are interested, talk to
Nathan. We need to know who's going by OCTOBER 9.
-In 2009 WE will be hosting MACHS here!!! The date is set for October
8-11....we would like to have some people on a committee for this to get a head
start on planning. See Nathan if you are interested.
4. MEMBERSHIP
-We have decided to do a $5 membership fee to jumpstart our club funds so we
can do some activities!
- Please pay Eric before or at the next meeting
5. BULB PLANTING at Allen Centennial Gardens
-October 15, Time TBA
6. MAJORS EXPLORATION FAIR
-Wednesday, October 22, 3:30-5:30. Memorial Union in the Great Hall
probably?
-we need to design a booth and need someone to stick around to answer
questions during the fair
-the fair is primarily designed for freshmen who are "undecided"
-see Nathan if you are interested....he would like to know
by the end of this week
7. CALS CAREER FAIR
-is TOMORROW! from 1-6pm at the Engineering Center
-Disney Epcot will be at the fair for the first time and offering internship
opportunites in aquaculture, entomology, plant science, and biotechnology.
PLEASE go down and spend a few minutes with them. They are extremely selective
about the schools that they visit and recruit from, and if we want them to come
back, we had better show ourselves off! If you are in CALS, you should have
gotten an email about it. If you are not and are interested, email me back and
I will forward that email to you. :-)
There is also an internship opportunity through Vic and Margaret Ball....flyers
and applications are available. The
deadline is October 1. The pay is generous and you also get an
opportunity to get a scholarship on top of it all.
