Meeting Minutes 2007 - 2008 April 30th, 2008
Hey all, April 16th, 2008 Kudos to all the awesome tree climbers at the last meeting! Now all we need to do is find some redwoods…. At the next meeting, (April 30th), we’ll be having elections for next year’s Hort Club officers! If you would like to nominate someone for a position, please send an e-mail to the club’s e-mail address. Check out the club website for “Position Responsibilities & Duties” (http://www.hort.wisc.edu/HortClub/officers.html). Also, we’ll be judging the pictures from the photo contest on the 30th. So there’s still plenty of time to get your entries in! And finally, the t-shirts are coming very soon! Huzzah! April 2nd, 2008 I hope you all enjoyed the nice spring weather we had today! I've seen some crocuses popping up, which I'm taking as a good sign. We had a lot to discuss at the meeting since we’ve got some pretty awesome stuff coming up: Sat. May 3rd (but may be switched to Sat. May 10th): Dr. Jull is taking hort club members on a trip to the Chicago Botanic Gardens!! Cost: free! But we need some info from you SOON if you're interested: e-mail Katie (zignego@wisc.edu) your name, e-mail address, and phone number. We'll be leaving at 9AM and returning sometime in the evening. Katie will let us know if the date needs to be switched. The Photo Contest has officially started!! Everyone, not just hort club members, is allowed to participate, so tell your friends! All photos are due by Wed. April 16th, just $3 for an entry fee per photo. Photos need to have living or once living plant material in them. Later, the club will take a look at the photos that have been entered and choose the winner(s)! For CALS week, we’ll need to get a volleyball team together to play at 7PM at the Nat. on Mon. April 14th, plus club members can participate in the Olympics at 4:30PM on Thurs. April 17th. Send Katie (zignego@wisc.edu) an e-mail if you’re interested in being part of the teams. Tues. April 19th is CALS Day for Kids. We’ll need help with setup at 8AM and help when the kids will be visiting between 8:30AM – 5PM. In previous years, we’ve given them dirt cups with seeds that they can grow. Any other suggestions? Johanna needs help proctoring an exam on Fri. April 25th: She needs 1-2 people to help with the setup on the 24th. Then she needs 3-4 people to help the morning of the 25th (8AM-11AM) to help proctor – you will get paid! Let Kate (kolson1@wisc.edu) know if you’re interested. Sat. April 26th is Family Horticulture Day at the West Madison Ag Research Station. Help is needed for setting up on Fri. 25th in the afternoon and volunteers are needed the 26th to help with answering hort-related questions! E-mail Nathan (nurben@wisc.edu) if you’re interested. The hort club’s end of the year banquet will be in place of the last meeting (on a Wed.) tentatively near the beginning of May. Last year, we went to Tutto Pasta. In 2009, we’re hosting the annual MACHS convention! We’ll need start organizing in the fall with setting up for plant ID quizzes and tours. Let Nathan (nurben@wisc.edu) know if you’re interested in helping. Good news! The t-shirts have been ordered! They’ll be $10 each. We’ll let you know once they come in. Also, apparently the Tropical Horticulture trip next winter will now be “new and expanded!” (Not quite sure what that means…but it should be fun!) That's all for now, folks. March 12th, 2008 Our last
meeting was before break on 3/12. It was great to see so many people! We had two
rep.s from David J. Frank give a presentation on the work that they do with
landscaping. They showed us a lot of cool slides from landscaping projects that
they did in years past for businesses and homeowners; some residents had pretty
awesome million-dollar projects with fountains, patios, decks, or mile-long
streams. They also do seasonal projects, like setting up and decorating
Christmas trees, and they're trying to give clients options that are more
"green," such as creating prairies for large, open areas of land. For more
information, check out their website:
http://www.davidjfrank.com/.
Also, we were given contact information cards for two landscape maintenance
department managers, so e-mail questions to Kurt Bartel (mail@davidjfrank.com)
or Lisa Stieve (lisa.stieve@davidjfrank.com). February 27th, 2008 We talked about a lot of interesting events coming up in the near future and the not-so-near future. But first off, we reinstated the Plant of the Week. Today it was: the Wandering Jew – a nice houseplant, but be careful how you dispose of it as it may become invasive! Thursday, 2/28 (tomorrow!): The CALS Spring Career and Internship Fair will be in the Engineering Centers Building from 1-6 pm: Meet with employers from across the nation! Begin your job or internship search, network with employers, or just start researching companies and careers in the Agricultural, and Life Sciences related area. Winter 2009: We will be hosting MACHS next year – a competition of hort-related events, for example, plant identification tests. We’ll need to help setting up for this in the fall, so if you’re going to be around in the fall (even if you’ve graduated), let Nathan (nurben@wisc.edu) or Katie (zignego@wisc.edu) know if you can help plan! We’ll have a photo contest near the end of March. Photos must contain at least some sort of living plant material. We’re going to make it a campus-wide event, so we’ll need help putting up flyers – Katie will let us know when she’s got them ready. CALS Week will be in April, with many fun activities. We have $100 to spend on materials to give to the visiting kids (who are ~ 9 yrs old). Last year, we gave them dirt cups with seeds. Some ideas were that kids could take baby plants from a Mother of Thousands and the club could have a terrarium or bog setup for a display. Any other suggestions? Also in April is Secretary/Staff Appreciation Day, so please come up with ideas for something easy to give to the department’s secretary/staff. For “Plant of the Week”: At each meeting, a club member will share some info about a plant. You just pick a plant that interests you, try to bring in a live specimen, and tell the club a little bit about it at one of our meetings. The next few meeting dates are 3/12, 3/26, 4/9, and 4/23, so send the club an e-mail if you’re interested in talking about a plant at one of them. That’s all for now. Have a good rest of the week! January 30th, 2008 Hey all! Our first meeting for the spring semester went very well. We talked about a lot of exciting events coming up, and it was great to see some new faces! This weekend!: Yes, it’s short notice, but the club will be going to the Orchid Quest at the Expo Center this weekend. Katie already sent out an e-mail with the specifics, but just as a reminder: it’s $6 per person and the group will probably leave around 11 either Saturday or Sunday. Send Katie an e-mail (zignego@wisc.edu) if you’d like to go and if you have a preference for which day. Valentine’s Day Dinner: For our next meeting (Feb. 13), we will go to Kate’s house for a potluck Valentine’s Day dinner, which will be at around 5:30pm. Please bring a dish to share with the group, and e-mail Kate (kolson1@wisc.edu) what you’re going to bring. There’s a promise of cupcakes, which is sweet. T-shirts!!: Huzzah! We’ve finally made a decision for the t-shirts! They’ll say “University of Wisconsin Horticulture” across the front and “We’ve got it growin’ on” on the back. The shirts will be forest green with either tan or white lettering (depending on cost). When we get some warmer weather, we’ll have our Donuts and Bagels Fundraiser. Some possible locations for the table will be in the Chem building or on the lawn of Chadbourne. If you have any ideas for where we could set up or any other ideas for fundrasiers, please send the club an e-mail!! In a few months, we’ll be having a Scavenger Hunt, where club members will get into teams and go around campus, finding horticulture-related things and identifying/describing plants. Please e-mail any ideas for what could be on the scavenger list (i.e. describe the plants by Abe’s statue). CALS week, including CALS day for kids, will be coming up in April. Club members will be able to sign up for various fun activities for that week. More details to follow. In March or April, the club will take a trip to the Chicago botanical gardens. It’ll probably be a day trip during the weekend. And, we’ll be able to get in free! Also, let us know if you have any ideas for places that club members could volunteer at, and we’ll try to arrange some transportation. November 28th, 2007 Leah Olson’s talk on herbs used in Chinese medicine was super interesting! And tasting the various herb powders was fun: combinations included the 4 Qi and 5 (well, 7) Tastes. The sweetest Taste was Sweet…
In the slightly near future, on Jan. 17th from 10am - 2pm, there will be the Mid-Am Student Career Center trade show in Chicago. At this career fair, you can have your resumé critiqued, practice for an interview, and get info about internships and job opportunities. Plus, there’s free stuff! Just fill out a form (talk to Katie if you need one) and send it in by Dec. 21st.
For all you seniors looking for jobs after graduation: Monrovia, a company that manages wholesale nurseries, is hiring for full time sales positions in California, North Carolina, and Georgia. Katie’s got some extra flyers if you’d like more details. Also, you could check out http://monrovia.com/.
As for T-shirts, Kate said that she will try to find some sort of flower design for them. Still, everyone is encouraged to bring in possible designs as well.
For warming those frigid extremities: take some Dang Gui Si Ni Tang to expel Cold in hands and feet… October 24th, 2007 Again, we were reminded that the Curriculum Committee still has a spot available for a student, who would then be able to give opinions on classes and share ideas for changes to the curriculum. If you’re interested, let Katie know. Also, for the t-shirts, we may just create a department shirt that says “UW Horticulture” on it unless you BRING IN IDEAS FOR A CLUB T-SHIRT. You can also send your ideas to uwhortclub@hotmail.com.
There’s NO meeting next week (Nov 7th) because we will be having a Thanksgiving Dinner together on either the 14th or the 15th. If you have a preference for which day it will be or if you can bring something, please let us know.
The current list for bringing food to the Thanksgiving Dinner: Sandy – something Robyn – something Tyler – something Christine – pistachio pineapple salad Emily – stuffing Tiffani – pumpkin pie cake (which apparently is both a pie AND a cake)
Also, for the meeting on Nov 28th, Kate’s sister will be giving us a talk on what it’s like to be an herbalist, which is awesome and should be very interesting!
The Hort Club website now has more pictures to look at and a new history section! Check it out: http://www.hort.wisc.edu/HortClub/ That’s it for now. Have a Happy Halloween! October 10th, 2007 We are extending the t-shirt design voting (again). The designs are due at our next meeting (Oct.24). Please have your ideas for designs ready because we're going to vote on them! Also, the next meeting will be potluck, so bring some eatables to share with the group. We'll have some pumpkin carving and caramel apple eating, so come join the fun! Oct. 18th: We'll be helping the Daughters of Demeter with their bulb planting in the Allen Centennial Gardens from 1pm until about 4pm. They are very sweet ladies and they'll have treats for those who come to help. You don't have to be there for the entire time; it's fine if you can only make it for a little while. Sometime around Oct. 22nd: We'll have a booth at the Hort Majors Fair again this year. Apparently, last year even the Agronomy booth outshone ours, so let's not have that happen again. We'll have to put up a banner and set up some plants as well. Exact date and time to follow. Sometime around early to mid-Nov.: The club will share a Thanksgiving dinner together. More details to follow. Nov. 8-11th: A group from the hort club will go to River Falls for MACHS to hang out with and compete against other hort clubs, and listen to some speakers. Members who have gone to it before say it's fun and that it’s a good experience. We need at least 2 more hort club members to go, and it's fine if we have more than 2 who want to go along; the more the merrier! Registration is due this Friday (Oct.19th), so send us an e-mail as soon as you can if you're interested! The Curriculum Committee of the Hort Department is looking to see if any hort club members would like to be part of the committee; you'll be able to share your ideas for new classes and other changes to the curriculum that you would like to try. The tropical class was a brain child of the hort club members who were on the committee, so you can have some influence September 26th, 2007 Hey everybody! We had a good meeting today. Here is some info on the upcoming events in case you couldn’t make it or need a reminder.
The Pumpkin Regatta (yay!) is Saturday, Oct. 6th. It starts at 11:00am and goes on for a few hours. We need volunteers to sell pumpkins, to ride pumpkins in the race, to be in the “rescue” boat with the Hoofers, or to be part of the “pier patrol,” keeping people who aren’t part of the race off the pier. So please come and help out as much as you can, even if you can only make it for a little while. And, we’ll need some help getting/unloading pumpkins, so let us know if you are available to help for that.
At the next meeting, we’ll be discussing club t-shirts again. Bring ideas because after we’ve discussed them, we’re going to have a vote! We’d like to be able to wear these t-shirts to CALS events and such, so try to keep designs and phrases tasteful.
We discussed other events like Bulb Planting, which will be on the 18th. More details to follow later.
We are working out plans to have a workshop for arranging flowers in vases. People who are interested, members of the Hort Club as well as anyone else on campus, will be able to sign up for it and then prepay for supplies. Also, we were brainstorming some ideas for other club activities. Some ideas were: repotting plants, or possibly going to a grape stomp or on a winery tour.
