Meeting Minutes 2006 - 2007

April 25th, 2007

Hey Everyone!   We had a very productive meeting so here is a quick recap!  

Tomorrow at 5PM is the CALS Olympics in the Jorns couryard (behind Allen Centennial Gardens) . Come compete against other CALS clubs in fun activities like pie eating, egg toss and tug of war!  

Also, Congratulations to our Photo Contest Winners!! All the entries were very beautiful and it was hard to choose a winner. But we finally narrowed it down to two.

Our end of the year banquet will be Wednesday May 2nd at 6:30PM at the Tutto Pasta near the capital. The address is 107 King Street.  From campus its probably best to walk up state street to the capital. take a right onto N. Carroll. then walk towards the Walgreens on east main street until you get to King Street. If you weren't at the meeting, please send us an email  so we can get an estimate of who is coming. ***Upcoming Events****  

1. CLUB FUNDRAISER: Wednesday April 25th we will be having a doughnuts and bagels fundraiser sale outside of Ag hall. We need club members to help work from 8AM - 11AM. If you weren't at the meeting and can help out please email us!  
2. CALS WEEK:  
    *Sunday April 22nd: Breakfast on the Farm (9:30AM - more details to follow) also Sunday, CALS volleyball tournament 5PM!! Lots of Fun!! No experience necessary( seriously!)  
    *Monday April 23rd: Blood drive in Upper Carson Gulley from 12 -6PM  
    *Tuesday April 24th: CALS day for kids. We will have a booth in the stock pavillion and need people to work from 8AM - 3:30PM. Its a really great opportunity and also fun!  
    *Thursday April 26th: CALS Olympics 5PM! Activities such as Tug of War, Egg Toss, Milk Flip Cup and Pie Eating Contest. Beat The faculty and other CALS Student Orgs!! Bring home the championship cowbell for Hort Club!  
   
*More details on CALS week to follow* The club gets points for any activities we participate in, so if you weren't able to attend the meeting but would like to be a part of CALS week please send us and email!!  
3. CLUB T SHIRT DESIGN: We have extended the deadline for the tshirt design to the next meeting! So bring in your most creative ideas for next years tshirts!  
4. PHOTO CONTEST: The deadline for the photo contest is April 23rd. We will be voting on the winning photo at our meeting on the 25th  
5. Field Trip To Nancy's Meadow Herbs: THIS SATURDAY APRIL 14th!! We will be leaving from campus at 12 noon. Come enjoy a really awesome horticultural experience. Nancy & Terry have a super cool business with tons of unique plants. If you are not allready signed up and would like to attend, please email the club!

Here's a quick recap of this weeks  meeting:

Thanks to Ed Knapton from Americas Best for his wonderful and informative presentation!  

We have lots of upcoming events for the club:

*April 11th is officer nominations. Anyone who is interested in running for a position  please attend this meeting. If you can't be at the meeting and want to be nominated or nominate someone please email the club.         
*Saturday April 14th there is a field trip to Nancy's Meadow Herbs. We will be leaving from Lot 40 at Noon. If you want to go and aren't signed up please email the club.          
*We are having a t-shirt design contest for the club. Please submit your ideas at our next meeting April 11th. We will be voting on the winning design.            
*Finally, its time for the photo contest . Photos are due April 23rd in the Hort Office. They can be any size, color or black and white, and must contain living or once living plant matter. Each entry is $3. Anyone can enter, and the winner recieves a monetary prize as well as getting their photo framed. We will be voting on the winning photo April 25th.

Hey Everyone!   Just a quick recap on the meeting:

 We enjoyed a wonderful presentation from David J. Frank landscaping company.  

Upcoming events:  
*The club is taking a field trip Saturday, April 14th to Nancy's Meadow herbs (also Terry the Cactus Guy) We will see their property and set up, which is very cool. We will be leaving campus around noon. Further details will be sent out by email. If you missed the meeting and would like to go, please email the club.  
*Also, next meeting we are voting on the WALSAA Senior award. This award goes to any senior graduating in may 07/december 07 who shows exemplary leadership and involvement.  All seniors in the club have been nominated, so think about who you would like to vote for.  
*Finally, Officer nominations for next year will be April 11th. So please think about if you want to run for office, or have someone in mind to nominate! If you have any questions about the duties of any position in particular or want to chat with a current position, check out the officers page.

Hey Everyone!   Here's a quick recap from the meeting this week. Thanks to everyone who contributed to our wonderful potluck. Everything was very delicious.

Hey Everyone!   Here's a quick recap of the meeting:

 Costa Rica was great! Anyone who is interested in going next year should contact Jim Nienhuis (nienhuis@wisc.edu) and submit an application. Mid-Am was an excellent time. And thanks to our great speaker from Breezy Hill Nursery.  

Up Coming Events:  

MACHS is an event for Horticulture clubs from around the country. This year it will be at Purdue university in Indiana. MACHS includes competitions as well as regional tours of growers and landscapers. If anyone is interested in going please email me (zignego@wisc.edu) or talk to Nathan, who went last year.  

There are internships available at Walt Disney, Missouri Botanical Gardens and Chicago Botanical gardens.  For more information on any one of them just send us an email.  

CALS is sponsoring the Keylon Braxton award for a deserving CALS student. If you would like to nominate a peer please contact our president Danielle for an application. Applications are due February 3rd.  

Orchid Quest is this weekend February 3rd. We are meeting at 12PM in lot 40 across from Plant Science (behind Babcock & across from the greenhouses). Anyone who would like to go and wasn't at the meeting please email me! Entrance is free if you come with the club!!   Next weekend is the PBS Garden Expo at the Alliant Energy Center (February 9th-11th). We are planning on getting a group together to go. I'll send an email next week including more details.  

Finally, there is an informational meeting for an Italy Study Abroad Trip on February 7th at 5:15PM in room 25 of Ag Hall. The trip will focus on Italian Architecture & Gardens.

Hey Everyone!
 
So I know these are a little late, but better late then never. So here's what happened at the last meeting in case you missed it.
 
1. We will be having two great speakers comming up. On November 29th we will be having a speaker from Midwest Groundcover. Then on December 13th we will be having Terry the Cactus Guy come speak for us. This is a great chance to hear more about the Horticulture industry. Also, we will possibly be going on a field trip to Orchids by the Ackers to check out their facilities. The date will most likely be Saturday December 2nd.
 
2. Bulb Planting was good. The weather was cool, but the company of the ladies from Daughters of Demeter was great. Thanks to all who were able to show up.
 
3. A big thanks to Irwin Goldman for transporting the plants to decorate our booth for the Majors Fair. We met some great students and answered many questions about Horticulture, Turf and courses offered at the University.
 
4. We are currently price shopping for the Pointsettia Sale. When we've chosen a business, we will prepare and distribute an order form. More details comming soon!
 
5. Finally!! The annually Thanksgiving Dinner! We will have it in place of our next meeting November 15th. Betsy Wanasek (erwanasek@wisc.edu) was kind enough to be the host this year! So a big thanks to her. We still need volunteers to cook & buy the turkey, stuffing, gravy, wine, juice, soda, ect. Please sign  up to cook these by emailing the club email. Details on the dinner time and directions to Betsy's house will be emailed to everyone shortly!

Hey Everyone!
 
Just a quick recap on the meeting tonight!
 
Reminder!! The bulb planting is TOMORROW at Allen Centennial Gardens from 1PM-4PM! Anyone who can stop by and help for a little while is greatly appreciated! Don't forget there will  be awesome treats like cookies and hot chocolate!! YUM
 
Also, the majors fair is next week, Wednesday October 25th from 330-530PM! Again, please come help even if you can only be there for an hour or less it would be AWESOME!
 
We also discussed the possibility of doing a Pointsettia fund raiser closer towards the end of November. We also talked about the possibility of doing some kind of workshop next semester. If anyone has any ideas about the fund raiser or workshop please email me!

Just a quick update on the meeting tonight! We enjoyed some deeelicious pizza and desserts. Danielle and Nathan reported that despite some rainy weather the Pumpkin Regatta was a sucess! Thanks to everyone who put in time and effort to help out the club!

Irwin Goldman came to speak about the Majors Fair taking place Wednesday October 25th from 3:30-5:30. Anyone who is interested in either setting up the booth and making the display or working during those hours please email me zignego@wisc.edu

Also a reminder that Bulb Planting at Allen Centennial Gardens will be Thursday October 19th from 1-4 PM. You don't have to come for the whole time. If you need directions to the gardens let me know.

Also some news from our CALS student Rep. Terry

*CALS winter leadership retreat is Jan 19-21. Every cals org is allowed two spots to attend the retreat. There is a small fee, but it should be fine. Contact Neel Mansukhani at namansukhani@wisc.edu. The deadline for the groups to turn in names is Nov. 1.

*Email Tanya Zimmerman if you are interested in a student/faculty position on the leadership committee. There is an opening and she is looking for someone by Oct. 14.

Hey Everyone!
 
We talked about a whole bunch of things at the meeting. So, to keep everything separate (and following Robyn's excellent example of course) this is going to be colorful! *YAY* I know you are all very excited!!
 
OK!!Thanks to all those who brought food to the pot luck! Everything was delicious.
 
Danielle and Nathan shared the details of the plant sale. Our total profit won't be finalized for another few weeks however. But despite some bad weather the sale went well. Thanks to all who put in time and effort to make it a success!!
 
Comming up is the INFAMOUS PUMPKIN REGATTA! Where else will you find folks racing giant pumpkins on a lake people?! No Where!! The Ragata will be on Saturday, September 30th from noon - 3. The club will be having a baked goods sale as well as some other activities. We had a sign up for the meeting, but for those of you that weren't there and want to help out, shoot me and email and let me know. We need baked goods, people to be there ect.
 
Next! We have Bulb Planting at Allen Centenial Gardens on Thursday October 9th from 1-4PM. Come for the whole time, come for an hour, come enjoy the wonderful treats provided, come earn points for Costa Rica!!
 
The CALS career Fair will be on Tuesday, September 26 from 5PM-8PM at the Kohl's Center. Great opportunity to make connections, look for jobs or internships for the summer!
 

Finally! The Majors Fair for incomming freshmen will be on Wednesday, October 25th from 3:30-5:30. We need people to help plan the booth and people to be ther during that time! So if you want to get involved keep October 25th in mind!

Plant Sale Update September 10th, 2006

Hey Everyone!
 
Just wanted to give you a little update on the plant sale! We did great on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and thanks to everyone who put in time and energy this weekend! However we still have alot of plants left and have decided to extend the sale to include tomorrow and Tueday. We will have our normal hours of 8AM - 6PM. I know everyone is really busy right now but if you have any time at all in the next two days please stop by the Stock Pavilion. And help spread the word about the sale being open two more days!

Hopefully all of you were able to make it to the kick off meeting and cookout , but if not , here's what you missed!!
 
Grill- master Terry served us up some delicious brats and burgers. We discussed the plant sale and signed up for times to work! Thanks to all who volunteered your time! Attached is the schedule for the times you signed up for. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come to your assigned time as you may be the only one working that shift!! But feel free to come any other times as well.
 
REMEMBER!!! the plant sale runs Friday, Saturday, Sunday 8AM-6PM, so those of you that didn't sign up, feel free to come whenever you are available, even if people are all ready signed up for those times! We need all of your help to make this a success!
