April 5th, 2006
Our first order of business at the meeting was discussing t-shirts. Danielle and Bonnie have been working on some ideas. Since we want them before the end of the year, we need to get on this. So what we will probably be doing is having a vote at the elections meeting on the t-shirts. We will need to know if you want one and what size.
The Photo Contest has been extended to next Friday, the 14th. Tell all your friends and it is open to Hort Club members as well! There are more posters to put up if you need something to do!
The end of the year Banquet will most likely be on Sunday April 30th. We are looking into a couple of different restaurants. More details will come!
We also had nominations for offices. If you were not at the meeting and would like to be nominated for a position and have not contacted us yet...you have until this weekend to do so.
We will be sending out an email with all the nominees soon. Then we will be having a short meeting next week to do voting. Watch for more information on this as well!
Please email us if you have any questions!
March 22nd, 2006
First Jim Nienhuis started talking about the new trip to Costa Rica AND Nicaragua. It sounds like it will be an amazing experience. Look for information when you register for classes. Hort 375.
Jim also talked about the Pumpkin Regatta for next year. We want to make it a joint effort between his class and the club. Several people had great ideas on how to make a little money from this event as well. We will probably be electing a committee chair person to work on this project.
Danielle talked about the Wisconsin Union Facilities Improvement Plan or WUFIP that I'm sure many of you have heard about. One of the options improvement is to add a green space. You'll be getting an email about voting on this sometime in the future. Read it over and place your vote!
The Photo Contest is underway! Photos are due in the Hort Office with $3 per photo by April 7th. For more information, look for posters all around campus!
Competitive Edge is this Saturday from 8:30 to 10 in Grainger. We've got enough students to help out, but if you want to stop by, you're more than welcome!
The Hort Club now has a Relay For Life team! The Relay is Friday April 21-22 starting at 6pm on Fri. If you are still interested in coming along and joining us, email Justin at
jphoshaw@wisc.edu.
Marlo and Nathan told us about their experience at MACHS last week. They had a great time and brought back so many new ideas for our club.
The next meeting will be a night of nominations. We will be talking about the different offices and the new comittees we would like to form. If you are interested in having an office next year, it is very important that you attend the meeting or at the very least, email the club and let us know what position you want. Then the plan is to have a meeting the week after to hold the voting. Watch for more details

January 25th, 2006
So I'd say our first meeting of the year went pretty smoothly...except for the little business with the room and the lack of napkins. But, being the plant people we are, a little dirtyness doesn't bother us! :)
First we did a little intro. Welcome to the new people and welcome back to everyone else.
We have some people talk about the Horticulture-related ventures that happened over break. Several people from the club went to Costa Rica on the Tropical Horticulture field trip. Amazing class and highly reccomended to everyone!
And a few people attended MidAm in Chicago last Thursday. Also a very neat experience. And congrats to Der for getting an internship with Midwest Groundcovers!
The Club will be participating in the Science Night at a local elementary school Tuesday Feb 7th. We've done this before and it's great fun showing little kids different kinds of plants. We don't have time information yet, but it will be later in the evening. Please email the club if you have an interest. And those of you who are interested, more information to come!
We also want to take a short excursion to the Orchid Quest at the Alliant Energy Center. We'll be going on Saturday Feb 4th and leaving from the Hort building at 10am. Please email if you want to come as we will need to figure out transportation. Check out this site for more info...http://www.orchidguild.org/content/quest.html
It was also brought to attention that the F.H. King Student Garden is looking for an intern for this spring/summer. More information to come as well.
Also if anyone has a textbook that they want to try to pawn off and didn't get to mention it at the meeting tonight, you're more than welcome to email the club (or me at
rdonahoe@wisc.edu) and I can forward that message to the students on our listing. For example, if anyone needs a $10 AAE 215 book, I've got one
December 14th, 2005
First Kevin Thalacker from Seminis Vegetable Seeds spoke to us about the company and the opportunites avaliable. They are located in DeForest, WI and we have a couple of information packets if anyone wants to work with vegetables!

November 30th, 2005
We had our first speaker at this week's meeting. A representative from Midwest Groundcovers spoke to us about the company. MG is a growing business is outside of Chicago.....and they have intership positions....if anyone is interested! :)
MidAm is coming up...this should look familiar.... For those of you who don't know, it's a HUGE Horticulture trade show and student career center. It's a great opportunity to see many, many Horticulture and Horticulture-related companies. It is Jan 18-20, 2006 in Chicago. On the Thursday there is a Student Career Show from 10-2 that actually gives you the opportunity to interview with companies looking for students graduates just like you! MID-AM is free if you pre-register by December 16. The club is looking into getting UW vans to go down on Wednesday evening and then go to the event on Thursday. Let us know if you are interested and we can hook you up with everything you need! Send in your registration!!
Traditionaly the club has picked a name or two off the Giving Tree and went shopping for gifts. We'd like to do this again if people are interested. We know it's a busy time for shopping, but would next week work? If you are interested and want to help, please email us with possible days and times that might work.
And finally, Jim mentioned that there is an Intership at Chicago Botanical Gardens and it's supposed to be great. If you are interested, you can email us or contact Jim Nienhus
November 16th, 2005
First of all, I apologize for being tardy (or totally negligent) with last meeting's minutes. Life just got away from me for a while. So to make up for it, I'm right on the ball this time. Thanks for understanding!
So everyone thank Erin for going to the Honor's Botany lab next week to give a little spiel about the club. If anyone wants to join her, she'll appreciate the company and help I'm sure. It's next Tuesday, Nov. 22nd at 5:30 at Birge Hall. There will also be a guest speaker on Orchid growing.
The club is giving $200 to the local food bank to help them purchase what they need for this season of giving. We thought this was easier than planning a day for shopping.
MID-AM is coming up!
The Annual Horticulture Society Thanksgiving Dinner will be next week. Right now it is scheduled for Tuesday at 5:30. However, this is still a bit iffy. We do know that it will be at Steve and Justin's house (1228 Chandler---directions to come) and we would like for everyone to bring something. Please let us know if you are coming and keep your eyes open for emails heading your way about this!
October 19th, 2005
First Marlo and Casey told us about their experience helping plant blubs as Allen Centennial Gardens. It sounded like they had fun! Thanks for helping out ladies!
And if you still want to get in on the bulb planing....the club is helping plant bulbs at Olbrich, this Friday the 28th from 1-4. Let us know ASAP if you want to do this and haven't signed up yet!
We also talked about the pumpkin regatta and possible ideas for next year. There were some great ideas presented and if you have any more we'd love to hear them!
There is a CALS leadership retreat next January 13-15. I don't have too much information on it, but let us know if you are interested and we can hook you up!
Der told us that we made a little over $5,000 at the plant sale. We are donating $100 to the Red Cross through the CALS Student Council.
We also decided to have the next meeting be a pot luck instead of getting pizza. Any thing you want to and can bring is welcome. We'll remind you again, but keep it in mind!
And the last thing is if anyone has any pictures of club activites from this year or past years, please email them to Adam Strehlow at
arstrehlow@wisc.edu
October 5th, 2005
It was a small turnout at the meeting tonight....but it's a busy time for everyone. Don't worry, we totally understand! But these meeting notes will get you all up to speed!
First we had a little report about the Grape Stomp! Sounds like it was fun and informational. If you want more details, find someone who went and ask!
The Leaf Mulch Sale is at Olbrich this Saturday. For those of you who haven't put this on your calenders yet.....It's from 9-3 but there are shifts. If you are still interested, you can email the club or Erin at
ejpresley@wisc.edu It should be a nice day and they will appreciate it!
And speaking of Olbrich, we will probably be helping with bulb planting there sometime in October. Molly is working on this and we will be sending an email out to everyone when we know more details. However, if you are interested please let us know!
Looking for something fun and entertaining for this weekend? The 1st Annual Pumpkin Regatta will be this Sunday at 1pm in front of Memorial Union. Wear a pumpkin helmet!
And finally, we are looking for input and ideas for a possible trip. It would be a winter break or a spring break trip. So if you have any ideas, places you want to go or things you want to see, please bring your ideas to the next meeting

The only problem here is that applications are due tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 26th. So if you are interested, email us ASAP and will get you an application.

If you owe money for a t-shirt, treasurer Der would like it as soon as possible.

September 7th, 2005
I speak for all the officers when I say it was excellent to see such a great turnout at the meeting. It looks like it will be a exciting year!
The meeting was brief and mostly just a basic overview of the Horticulture Society in general. After introductions, we talked about the variety of activities that have happened over past years. I won't repeat the list, but know that they are good! And again, if anyone has any ideas, suggestions or general comments, we are always willing to listen!
And then the big thing.....the Plant Sale!! For those of you who don't know, forgot or haven't seen the signs yet: the Sale starts Friday at 8am. It runs from 8am to 6pm Friday through Tuesday or until the plants are sold out. It is in the Stock Pavilion (on Linden Drive, next to Babcock Hall). We will be doing some final setting up between 1 and 7pm tomorrow (Thursday). Help is always welcome, so if you have some free time, feel free to stop by.
Also we still have some spots to fill for working the sale. Check out the attached schedule to see what open spots are available and to remind yourself of when you are working. If you know you can come in at a certain time, please send me an email so I can put you on the schedule. If you are not sure, you are more than welcome to just show up and help out whenever you can. And please remember to sign in and out when you work so we can record hours worked for points.
Ok, I think that's it. I know it's a lot of information, but don't be scared to email me back with any questions!
